Glasgow Commonwealth Games day four sees athletics, swimming, and gymnastics events

Day four of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games features a range of events, including the start of the athletics programme, along with ongoing competitions in swimming, gymnastics, and weightlifting. Athletes from various nations are competing for medals across these disciplines.
In athletics, world champion steeplechase runner Geordie Beamish is set to compete in his specialist event. The swimming programme includes defending champion Lewis Clareburt in the 200m butterfly, while Erika Fairweather will anchor the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. Additionally, Birmingham gold medallist Josh Willmer is contesting the SB9 100m breaststroke.
Weightlifting and Gymnastics Highlights
In weightlifting, Nigeria’s Rafiatu Lawal secured a gold medal in the women’s 58kg category. Lawal demonstrated a dominant performance, lifting 117kg and then an additional 122kg. She extended her lead further with a final attempt of 126kg, resulting in a victory that placed her 30kg ahead of the bronze medallist. Lawal had previously won gold in Birmingham four years prior in the 59kg final.
During the competition, England’s Eliza Pratt initially led after a 109kg lift in the clean and jerk but later dropped in ranking. Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau faced challenges in the snatch section of the women’s 58kg final, successfully lifting 94kg on her third attempt, which briefly put her in first place. However, Lawal then broke the Games record by clearing 95kg and subsequently 100kg.
Artistic gymnastics saw Canada’s Felix Dolci claim gold in an event with a score of 13.766, surpassing his compatriot Emard. Australia’s James Hardy earned a bronze medal, mirroring his achievement in the floor exercise. In the men’s rings final, Canada’s Jordan Carroll delivered a routine that scored 15.000, with 6.000 for difficulty and 9.000 for execution, placing him in gold medal position. Scotland’s Reuben Ward scored 14.966, while Cyprus’ Marios Georgiou recorded 13.100.
Earlier in the men’s rings final, Cyprus’ Sokratis Pilakouris, a silver medallist in this event in 2022, scored 13.466. England’s Adam Tobin scored 13.066, and Luke Whitehouse, who won gold in the floor exercise, scored 13.1. In the women’s uneven bars final, Canada’s Ellie Black scored 13.9, placing her in second, while Australia’s Ruby Pass achieved a score of 14.333, moving into a gold medal position.
Netball and Wheelchair Basketball Results
In netball, England demonstrated a strong performance against Malawi. England led 37-23 at the end of the second quarter and extended their lead to 44-27 with 8.58 remaining in the third quarter. They continued their dominance, leading 55-33 with 14.19 left in the fourth quarter, eventually reaching a score of 72-37.
The men’s wheelchair 3×3 basketball saw England defeat Kenya with a score of 21-0, marking the first shutout in the competition. In women’s 3×3 basketball, Australia played against Canada, with Australia securing the win in overtime. Both Australia and Canada are advancing to the knockout stages of the competition.
The medal tally shows Australia leading with a total of 17 gold medals, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This includes achievements such as Cam McEvoy becoming the first person to swim 50m under 21 seconds twice, and Lani Pallister winning the women’s 1500m freestyle race for the first time at a Commonwealth Games. Jesse Moore earned a bronze medal in the men’s all-around gymnastics final, followed by Breanna Scott’s silver in the women’s event.
