South African World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams dies at 25
Jayden Adams, a midfielder for South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns, has died at the age of 25. His passing was confirmed by the country’s sports ministry and his club. Adams had recently participated in all three of his nation’s group stage matches at the 2026 World Cup.
The cause of Adams’ death has not been publicly disclosed. He was a prominent figure in South African football, having played a key role in his club’s recent success and representing his country on the international stage.
A rising star’s career
Adams was a product of the youth development system at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. With Sundowns, he contributed to the team’s victory in the African Champions League during the 2025/26 season, marking a significant achievement in his club career.
On the international front, Adams made his debut for South Africa against Mozambique in 2022. He earned 13 caps for his national team, scoring two goals, both of which came during the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. His involvement in the World Cup saw him start in the Group A fixtures against Mexico and the Czech Republic.
He also came on as a substitute in South Africa’s 1-0 win over South Korea. This victory secured the team’s first-ever progression to the knockout rounds of the tournament. South Africa was subsequently eliminated from the competition in the round of 32 after a match against Canada, a game in which Adams did not play.

The South African Football Players’ Union, an official representative body for players in the country, also released a statement. The union conveyed its devastation at his untimely passing, noting that he had recently carried the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction at the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered his condolences as well, remarking on the sadness of Adams’ passing just weeks after his participation in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign. Infantino extended his thoughts and sympathies to Adams’ family, friends, and teammates on behalf of FIFA and the global football community, emphasizing that the Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star would be greatly missed.
Mamelodi Sundowns, Adams’ club, also confirmed his passing in a statement. The club’s chairman, the Motsepe family, the board of directors, technical team, players, management, staff, and supporters collectively expressed their deepest condolences to his family and friends. They offered prayers for comfort and strength to the Adams family and everyone who knew him during this period of mourning.
