All Blacks make strategic selections
The All Blacks have made key changes to their lineup for the upcoming Nations Championship match against Ireland, with coach Dave Rennie focusing on strengthening the forward pack. Tupou Vaa’i has been selected at blindside flanker, a move intended to provide more options in the lineout and add power to the loose forwards. Rennie noted Vaa’i’s skillset and athleticism as reasons for his selection in this role, especially in anticipation of facing strong forward packs throughout the year.
Returning from injury, Patrick Tuipulotu will start at lock alongside Josh Lord. Tuipulotu expressed satisfaction with his recovery and readiness for the match, highlighting the team’s preparation under the new coaching staff. Rennie believes Tuipulotu’s presence will be crucial in the set piece battle against Ireland’s formidable tight five.
The selection of Vaa’i at flanker has led to Anton Segner and Peter Lakai being named on the bench. Rennie emphasized the importance of the set piece, particularly the scrum and lineout, in the upcoming fixture.
Moorby’s debut start and team confidence
In the backline, Josh Moorby is set to make his first test start on the left wing, following an impressive debut off the bench against Italy. Rennie praised Moorby’s performance throughout the year and his confidence in his initial outing. Moorby himself reflected on his debut, acknowledging the quick learning curve and the support from his teammates. He also mentioned his development during his time playing in Europe, which he believes made him a more rounded player.
Jordie Barrett, the second five-eighth, participated fully in Thursday’s training after dealing with a minor issue earlier in the week. Quinn Tupaea returns at centre. Caleb Clarke, who Moorby replaces in the starting lineup, is expected to provide impact off the bench with his explosive play and high ball skills.
Rennie acknowledged the threats posed by Ireland, describing them as an excellent side with genuine confidence. He stressed the need for the All Blacks to perform better than they did in their previous match against Italy.
Ireland’s challenge and Eden Park record
Ireland coach Andy Farrell views the upcoming match as a significant opportunity to challenge the All Blacks‘ long-standing unbeaten record at Eden Park. Farrell noted that his team had a similar chance in 2022 but could not secure a victory. Ireland will field a full-strength side, with Robert Baloucoune returning from a hamstring injury and Tadhg Beirne starting at flanker after captaining the team against Japan last week.
Jimmy O’Brien will play on the left wing and is one of five players who have started all three Nations Championship games for Ireland, alongside Stuart McCloskey, Jack Conan, James Ryan, and Tom O’Toole.
The All Blacks are defending a significant unbeaten run at Eden Park, a record that spans many years. Rennie and Tuipulotu both acknowledged the pressure and motivation associated with maintaining this record. Tuipulotu stated that the team views the record as a source of energy rather than a burden, driving them to perform at their best. He also noted the healthy respect the All Blacks have for Ireland, recognising them as a strong rival, especially after Ireland’s series win in New Zealand in 2022.
