Doueihi and Marshall crisis meeting concludes with brief update
A meeting between Adam Doueihi, Benji Marshall, and Wests Tigers officials has concluded, with chief executive Shaun Mielekamp providing a brief statement. The meeting, which also included Pat Richards and Doueihi’s agent, was described by Mielekamp as “very positive and productive.” Following the discussions, Doueihi is expected to return to club training.
The meeting was held amidst reports that Doueihi was considering leaving the club due to a strained relationship with Marshall. Doueihi had opted not to play in the team’s Round 21 match against the Raiders after being informed he would play at lock instead of halfback, his usual position. This decision came despite Marshall reportedly initially reversing his decision to play Doueihi at lock, offering him a spot in the halves, which Doueihi then declined.
Doueihi’s position and team dynamics
The situation developed after Marshall named Doueihi in the No. 22 jersey for the Raiders game, despite Doueihi being cleared to play following a successful challenge at the NRL judiciary. Doueihi has made 13 appearances this season, all in the halfback position. The decision to shift him to lock led to his unavailability for the match.
Billy Slater described the situation as a “debacle” and criticised what he perceived as an “individual mindset” among some players at the club. He suggested that players have a duty to play, even if they are not feeling entirely right. Andrew Johns echoed this sentiment, calling the situation “absolutely ridiculous” and highlighting a recurring pattern of drama at the Wests Tigers.
Marshall, however, stated he understood Doueihi’s disappointment regarding the positional change. He acknowledged that if a player is not mentally prepared to play, they cannot be forced. Marshall expressed his commitment to making decisions he believes are best for the team and the club, while also recognising the human element of a player’s feelings.
The team’s performance in Round 21, a 56-10 loss to the Raiders, further intensified scrutiny on the club. Some commentators, including Josh Morris and Steve Roach, suggested that a significant loss could lead to teammates turning against Doueihi for not being available. Morris questioned Doueihi’s professionalism, noting that this was not the first time the playmaker had made himself unavailable due to positional disputes, referencing a similar incident with former coach Brett Kimmorley.
Contract status and future outlook
Adam Doueihi remains under contract with the Wests Tigers until the end of the 2029 season. He signed a two-year extension in August 2025, followed by a new deal in March this year. This long-term commitment has led some to argue that Doueihi was aware of his obligations when signing the contracts.
The club’s chief executive, Shaun Mielekamp, delivered his update in a brief 21-second press conference, declining to answer questions from the media. He emphasised that what was discussed in the meeting would remain private, stating, “what is said in that room stays in that room.” Doueihi arrived at Tigers HQ around 7:50 am and departed approximately 45 minutes later.
The focus now shifts to Marshall’s team selection for the upcoming Round 22 clash against the Eels. The inclusion, or absence, of Doueihi on the team sheet will be closely watched. In Doueihi’s absence for Round 21, Javon Andrews debuted at halfback alongside Jarome Luai.
Marshall has described the recent period as the toughest of his coaching career, acknowledging the challenges faced by the club over the past two years, both on and off the field. He reiterated his passion for his job and his commitment to turning the club’s fortunes around. The Wests Tigers will host the Eels next Sunday.
